Medlars Gardens & Grounds
Restoration &
Development

Meet Michael (Mickey) Medlar. He comes with the house, a kind of Guardian and Gate-Keeper. All a bit "Game of Thrones" but he helps to guide you through the pages and what we have done and to put his own unique slant on things "Medlar"!

Medlars was purchased in September 2023 after it's being in the same family for some 70 years, spending it's time as a family home across many generations.

Now with the ownership changing it's time for the house to move into the next stage of it's life with a nod to it's recent past and it's more distant  history. A new family and a new life with an investment to give it many, many more years of enjoyment especially in this ever changing and challenging world we are in today

Medlars 16th Century Cottage Refurbishment

Each Individual Element of the Plan and the Vision

These are the four main elements of the Restoration and Refurbishment of Medlars house and grounds and outbuildings into a luxurious home to suit the 21st century.

The House

Medlars is a listed property sitting in the sublime English countryside of West Sussex. It was owned in the past, some 70-100 years ago by a small scale farmer and was the farmhouse with a cluster of agricultural buildings close by which over time have been replaced by the current outbuildiings. The house has also undergone a number of "improvements" in it's life. Most of these have sadly resulted in much of the original being changed or compromised with, so all is a litle tired.

The Garden

The garden has suffered a degree of neglect over the last few years and is now in need of substantial restoration. There are the remains of two vegetable gardens including a hugely overgrown fruit cage, some various fruit trees and many stumps where trees once stood and have been lost. The garden overlooks the Knepp Castle Rewilding Estate so deer fencing prevails though again the cleft chestnut post and rail is mostly in need of replacement. The entrances are all overgrown and in need of updating together with new gates, posts and so on.

The Garden
House

This wil be developed out of the 'Annexe'. The annexe is a self contained single-storey building near to the house used in the past as an office and more recently for live-in care staff. The concept is to develop this into a Garden House centred on the view over the the Knepp Castle Estate, the rewilding and countryside.

We see the Garden House as being a place of tranquility, and a place of books and art.

The Swimming Pool

The swimming pool was installed in 1978 by the local company, Fowlers Pools. It's constructed out of concrete and is as sound as it was when first installed but the passage of time has left it a little sad. So, this will be looked at with a view to heating with Reneables and restoring BUT if this proves too costly or impractical then the Pool will most likely become a very large pond though a natural looking pond is also very expensive to achieve  though we have created a number in the past. A restored pool could be an interesting part of the overall property vision.

Front view is not completely what it seems.....

Not much used front gate
